Peaches - Set it Off EP
(Kitty Yo)

At Yale, the Porn 'N Chicken club meets biweekly to eat chicken, drink, and watch porn. This sort of mass viewing of pornography (fully lit mass viewing, mind you) probably happens at every college campus, and it generates a mixed bag of reactions. Some will give a nervous laugh or too and try to ignore it, some will fully get into the absurdity of it and find humor in each odd scenario, and others will get into it in the way someone might get into porn if they were viewing it alone.

Regardless of the reaction, the end result is an opener attitude towards sex. Sex happens; so be it. Listening to Peaches garners the same sort of reactions. Peaches is a Canadian born pro-sex feminist who in order to pursue her music career moved to Germany, as each young Canadian dreaming of stardom yearns to do. Peaches describes things explicitly, blurting out sexual orders backed by discount disco electronica, made from broken old Casios. Her music is basic and, more or less, horrible; it is only a vehicle for her elicit raps, the mirror image of Eazy E ordering "just don't bite it" on some early NWA song.

Peaches' new EP for "Set it Off" (a song off last year's The Teaches of Peaches) is pretty much pointless because it focuses on the part of Peaches' music that sucks. If anyone listens to Peaches for the outdated electronic grooves, this EP might be of interest, but listening to Peaches for the music is like reading Playboy for the articles. The EP includes two versions of "Set it Off," a radio mix and an "Accelerated Funk Mix" by DJ Assault. The accelerated mix is annoying and idiotic; it's just the same thing as the radio mix played at half-Chipmunk speed. The Kid606 remix of "Fuck the Pain Away" (the original also on The Teaches of Peaches) is a bit more worthwhile. Peaches' music is plain and retro, so it definitely makes sense to have a inventive electronica artist have his way with it and try and make it a little more sonically interesting. Kid606 is definitely successful, creating a jittery hip-hop groove, however if you've heard the original, don't waste anything more than a download on this remix.

This EP ends up being the PG-13 version of Peaches. All the really offensive material has been removed by the remixers or through the song choice. All that's left is a couple "fuck"s and some really shitty electronica.
