Mogwai - My Father My King EP (Matador)
Build. Retreat. Build. Hold. Feedback. My Father My King is one 20 minute song that follows the Young Team-era formula as closely as possible, going from barely audible to monster rock mode, all the way repeating the same guitar phrase. The song is the mirror opposite of their latest full length, Rock Action, forgoing singing, strings, and pop production techniques for one simple melody, "the build," and Steve Albini's as-it-is "engineering." The song likely takes longer to perform than it did to compose, as this one melody the song uses is lifted from an old Jewish hymn taught to the band by Arthur Baker, subtly morphing it a couple times through the 20 minutes but largely relying on "the build" for effect. Negative points to Albini for his production job, though. Steve, my speakers are not on fire, and my stereo still works... you must have done something wrong. The levels go up to 10, right?
