Loscil - Triple Point
(Kranky)

This is really good electronic music! The beats are subtle and not overwhelming, and the melodies are strong and interesting. Even the background sounds are complimentary and add to the texture of this fine record. I had all but given up on hearing anything in the electronic music world that was both subtle and melodic. Seems like nowadays one needs some sort of schtick, from sampling CD clicks to plastic surgery, as the source material.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good gimmick! It just seems to me that electronic musicians are getting away from what really matters... the music! Loscil also has its shtick, but they don't let it (thermodynamics) overcome the music. If I was unaware that this album was based on the concepts of thermodynamics, I would like it just as much.

Some of the tracks on Triple Point bring to mind Seefeel and even Selected Ambient Works II era Aphex Twin. This is definitely a very good thing. All of this work shows an attention to beats and melody and the balance thereof. I can only hope that there will be more electronic musicians gutsy enough to follow Loscil's lead.
