5 out of 12 We Love the City cover

Hefner - We Love the City
(Too Pure)

I didn't know quite what to expect from Hefner, having never heard them previously, but I tend to trust Too Pure as they are a great label who has put out records from everyone from Stereolab and Mouse on Mars to Pram and Moonshake to PJ Harvey. So, I figured We Love the City was worth a shot.

However, I don't like this record at all. Perhaps it was the singing which I found to be mixed too high and really grating or maybe the songs that seemed overtly precocious, but Hefner really got on my nerves. I really liked the background singing and at times I felt that a couple of songs had potential, but a stupid chorus (possibly lifted from a Blur song) inevitably crept up and wrecked any subtlety that had been established.

I guess that this type of sappy, dramatic music doesn't particularly appeal to me. There's a lot of songs on the record though, so if you like this sort of thing, that's pretty good I guess. If you don't, the record can seem interminable.
