10 out of 12 The Rub cover

Annie Hayden - The Rub
(Merge)

Annie Hayden has the most clear, expressive voice, accompanied by music so complex and lovely it can easily stand on its own. Annie's voice is sincere and delicate. Her songs are heartfelt--that comes through in every aspect of her music--yet she manages to avoid sentimentality.

The acoustic guitar also shines throughout the album with Annie's careful, involved picking and strumming causing notes to ring out then blend into graceful melodies and harmonies, like in "Pistol and Glasses." Substantial drums, base, and acoustic guitar are often embellished by piano, horns, and electric guitar that flutter in and out of songs such as "Wood and Glue" and "Albatross."

Every song on The Rub is so pleasant! This overwhelming pleasantness makes this album very easy to like. The CD is only thirty minutes long, but it is so full of beautiful music that when you are listening to it, time doesn't even matter. The Rub is Annie Hayden's first solo album after leaving the band Spent, and I hope many more will follow.
