Fuck - Gold Bricks
(Insound)

If you felt Fuck-ed over by the relatively short length (35 minutes) of Fuck's latest full length, Cupid's Cactus, then buy this album today: 63 minutes of music and two videos for about six U.S. dollars. With prices like that you must be asking, "Is that some sort of compilation?" Yes, this is almost every Fuck song ever released on something other than a full length Fuck album, including highlights from the band's cassette demo from 1994 and many of their hard to find singles.

Being an odds-and-sods, you get plenty of odds and plenty of sods. That is to say, the music here can be rather good (mostly songs from the recent singles, of which there are several) or rather poor (compilation appearances and songs from their debut cassette).

The album starts off well with "Diapers": "I can see through those tight white pants, and it's time to change the diapers." A standard Fuck pop song, but also a good one, with odd sounds, even odder lyrics, and a barroom chorus. "Situation" has a more angular sound but is equally as good, sounding as if the guitars are being recorded backwards. "Somewhere's Else" somehow manages to both be a loud, noisy rock song and very slow-paced.

The compilation also has several covers. "She's a Rainbow" is a Rolling Stones cover recorded during BBC's 60th birthday celebration for John Peel. It starts off very straightforward, but after a couple verses, morphs into a psychedelic-fairy version of the song. "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch!" starts off interesting, using a simple guitar part, but being recorded for a radio broadcast, the loose nature of the recording leads to an irreverent vocal overdub which lessens whatever appeal the song had. Also, unfortunately, "Me So Horny" is not a cover of a 2 Live Crew song.

There is more than enough good music on this compilation to warrant your six dollars. If you bought two of the singles contained here, you'd already have spent more than the price of this EP, and most of the songs from the singles are very good. (However, be forewarned: at least half of these 24 songs aren't good at all.)
