French Kicks - Young Lawyer (StarTime)
The searing "Living Room Is Empty" is a truly GREAT song, perhaps the finest "indie rock" song I've heard in some time. New York's French Kicks are not ashamed of their pop influences, sounding closer to the Beatles than the Velvet Underground, though still capable of rocking hard.
Two guitars intertwine in an occasionally Television-esque style, though the beat is closer to the style of the Jam. And having mentioned four other bands in the last two sentences I'll now discuss the merits of the French Kicks themselves. Jagged (but not harsh) guitar riffs, solid drumming, and tasteful background vocals make the French Kicks hard to dislike; never do any of the songs on this EP drag. The above mentioned "Living Room is Empty" is one to be listened to on repeat, and the title track is a hit as well. Occasional piano flourishes and not-too-mod melodies really make this disc a lot of fun, and the production is crisp too. Recommended.
