David Hurn, Tundra Survey, Billy Mahonie - Four Seasons Singles Club (Day Release)
Installment 2 of this series brings 3 new CDs by a couple bands I've never heard and one I
have heard but don't really like. It's pretty exciting. This series is split up between
each of the four seasons, with 3 bands contributing an EP or single for each season. So,
all told, there are 12 CDs. The last installment had an EP by the always amazing Rothko, so these
bands have a lot to live up to.
David Hurn is a singer songwriter in something of the classic sense. But, armed with his acoustic
guitar and emotionally driven voice, he fails to inspire much... Even Worsely Drawn Boy.
Tundra Survey employ guitar, strings, and some vague singing. It fluctuates between being pretty
(in tune) and grating (WAY out of tune). The vocals are more than sort of annoying, particularly on the
third track, "Burnt Reasons." Godspeed your high school music project.
The Billie Mahonie CD is a big bright spot on this season's installment. They made great use of
the space they were given and put 11 songs on this, making it an album really, not a single. Which I
couldn't be happier about since I think it's great! It's supposed to be a tribute to Jet Johnson, but
I don't know what/who that is, so whatever. The songs are home recorded, and have a warm, homey feel.
While this doesn't inspire me to re-attempt getting into their other releases, this does validate this
CD-box, and makes it worth purchasing.
