Film School - Brilliant Career
(Me Too!)

The first day I listened to Film School, it was an overcast and breezy, late spring/early summer day. One of those days when it's still warm despite the fact that the sun is being diffused by high clouds, and the breeze seems at times unsettling and at other times refreshing. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting to discover this album. I actually took my stereo outside, sat on my front porch, and listened to the album twice in a row. It literally seemed as if Brilliant Career was written as a soundtrack for that day.

The songs come across as a subtle wash with occasional melodic highlights breaking through. The record has an uneasy sense of hope that could be mistaken for despair. The album seems best when listened to as whole rather than as individual songs. In fact if I have it in the CD player with other CDs on random I always loose interest in the Film School songs. I guess what I'm saying is it takes more than one song to get into the mood, and to me that's what this record is about.

Film School is primarily the work of Oakland resident Krayg Burton. From the impression I get there seems to be a revolving line up. Brilliant Career features Kyle Statham from Fuck and ex-Pavement member Scott Kannberg, who definitely add the flavor of their respective bands to the record. I really recommend this album. I think it will make great mood music for this summer.
