Dianogah - Hannibal 7" (Southern)
Dianogah have a secret, and it's about time someone let the world
know. Dianogah is a pop band. They have a gimmick and a hometown
that lumps them with a bunch of bands they don't sound like much
at all, but they owe much more to Arcwelder and Archers of Loaf
than Coltrane or Coleman. Dianogah's new 7" is two more Arcwelder
or Karate style rock songs from the same Albini-recorded sessions
that brought us Battle Champions. They are pretty good
Dianogah songs as well; I can think of a few songs on Battle
Champions that are much weaker than either of these songs,
so they definitely are not leftovers. Rather, they are leftover
by design.
The design behind holding these two songs back was so that the
A-side, "Hannibal," could be released at the same time as the
major motion picture of the same name. The song has little to
do with the movie: there are no gruesome lyrics, and the basses
are all soft-n-easy--much better suited to eating muffins or perhaps
waffles than brains or kidneys. The flow to the basses is the
key to the song, and its one of the stronger pop songs of
these sessions. Drums are used minimally in "Hannibal,"
but on the B-side, the Fiona Apple-iciously titled "A Bear Explains
the Right and Wrong Ways to Put on a Shirt, Shoes, Pants, and
a Cap,", the drums are the lead instrument. Here, the basses
remain soft-n-easy, but the song sounds excited and jittery
due to the drums.
The B-side ends abruptly, mid-stride, making this short 7"
seem short. The songs are good though. Perhaps Battle
Champions would have been more satisfying if they had
been included.
