David Candy - Play Power
(Jetset)

David Candy is Ian Svenonius' (former frontman of the Make-Up and the Nation of Ulysses) attempt to fuse his love of all things 60s and kitch with his own inscrutable sense of humor and unmistakable style. "Playpower" succeeds because it is funny, though in a way that is perplexing. I kept getting the feeling that maybe I shouldn't be laughing, but when "David Candy" reads from his imaginary diary or starts ranting about how much he loves me and how I'll never have to be without him to hold my hand, I can't help myself.

Don't get me wrong, this is no masterpiece of modern indie rock or defining moment in a burgeoning scene, but it is fun and at times pretty catchy! The basslines drive the songs along pretty well, and the whole recording sounds as if a glaze of subtle reverb has spilled out over everything. Whenever Ian Svenonius (as David Candy of course) starts on one of his diatribes about art, literature, or his favorite city, the music takes a backseat and fades into the background. I suppose that the bottom line is that if you like Mr. Svenonius, you'll like this record. If you think his lisping hipness is not so sweet, you better take a pass at David Candy. I, for one, totally enjoyed it!
