D - Untitles
(Soul Static Sound)

Uber-remixer, DJ, and owner/proprietor of Soul Static Sound, Darryl Moore, has remixed and worked with bands like To Rococo Rot and Tortoise under the name D. Untitles is Moore's first full length album, and it shows that you don't really need source material to create a jumble of weird sounds and beats.

The 5 songs on Untitles are unassuming, cluttered soundscapes that sound like a truckload of fireworks set off in space. This is adequate headphone music, detailed enough to warrant listening to it several times in order to absorb all the sounds floating around you. Ultimately, though, this is better served as soundtrack material for Arthur Clarke's 2061; on its own, it fails to either soothe or perk the ears.

Sounds swell, beats crackle and hiss, random tones from machines form short melodies and then quickly dissolve; the album is very elaborately constructed. However, none of these swells, crackles, or veiled melodies make any attempt to grab your attention. They just pleasantly linger in the background for the album's duration. Also, to call Untitles an album is misleading, as it is only 5 songs and just over 20 minutes in length. This is a full length in price only, and an import price at that.

There is plenty of electronica out there to get the party started. Untitles is music to get the party finished. Some may get bored and leave, some may fall into a trance, but rest asssure, once this is on, the drinking and dancing is over.
