Bonnevill - Pelican EP (Bella Union)
Bonnevill's 25 minute Pelican EP is the 3rd installment of Series 7, a Bella Union CD
series consisting of 7 7-song instrumental CDs by 7 different artists. While I have
yet to hear the first installment of the series, based on this Bonnevill EP, the amazing
Rothko In the Pulse of an Artery EP, which was the 2nd installment of the series, and
the list of upcoming installments from Jah Wobble, Robin Guthrie & Simon Raymonde (Cocteau
Twins), and Harold Budd, this is going to be an outstanding and groundbreaking collection
of CDs.
Bonnevill features Jessica Billey (Disaster Action Team, Lofty Pillars, Boxhead Ensemble) on
violin and piano and Mick Turner (Dirty Three and all things Tren) on guitar. And, where
their debut release (part of Temporary Residence's Travels In Constance series) was somewhat
frustrating to me because of how far it traveled into more avant-garde territory, the 7
songs on Pelican sound exactly like what you would expect from the best of the bands
they are both in.
Moving away from abstraction perfectly suits Turner's beautiful guitar wanderings and
Billey's fragile and melancholy violin, and allows for a more natural blending of their
individual styles.
