Belle and Sebastian - Jonathon David EP (Matador)
Becca was an American girl. In Switzerland, where she was living, she didn’t have any friends, which meant that if she wanted to go see fading, self-styled literary-indie darlings Belle and her incestuous brother-lover Sebastian in Scotland, she would have to go by herself. When she complained about this to her American sponsor, he suggested that she carry a copy of J.D. Salinger’s "Franny and Zoe," which would be certain to impress all of the cover-judging cool kids that liked to talk to each other during Belle’s shows where she made out with Sebastian. They would be certain to see Becca’s impeccable taste in reading material as they looked around to look at the other cool kids who were looking at them. He even gave her his own personal copy.
The Belle and Sebastian show was a tremendous success. Sebastian copped a feel. Becca had a wonderful time. Belle herself complemented her for bringing such a wonderful book to the show, and Sebastian wrote his name on it. It’s one of their favourites.
Meanwhile, Becca’s American sponsor took a trip to visit an aging friend on the temperate coast. The American sponsor’s friend had a new copy of Jonathan David. Together they decided that the title track seemed a bit slapdash and, perhaps, sadly indicative of the future of Belle and Sebastian’s forbidden and no less (rightfully) illegal affair. Tucked behind it, though, were two sweet gems, B-sides that reminded them of the first time they saw Belle and Sebastian kiss.
