27 - Songs From the Edge of the Wing (Relapse)
Songs From the Edge of the Wing, originally released
in 1999 on Reproductive Records (owned by guitarist
Ayal Naor), was recently re-released worldwide on
Relapse Records. 27 has been around since 1997 and
consists of Maria Christopher (used to be in Dirt
Merchants), Ayal Naor (formerly of Spore), and Neil
Coulon.
Songs From the Edge of the Wing contains seven songs,
each with a distinct style. Despite this diversity,
the songs are graceful together. 27’s attention to
melody and atmosphere is obvious, especially the
delicate balance between lyrics, vocals, and
instruments.
Although usually somber, the music has a pleasant
quality. "Easy Trigger" sets the mood of the album
with its slow, uneven drums and smooth vocals. In
every song, but especially this one, Maria Christopher
(vocalist and guitarist) uses her voice with the
instruments, not on top of them. She seems to be
singing a duet with the guitars, each one taking turns
in the spotlight as well as blending expertly
together.
Another outstanding song, "The Lone Mariachi," has an
old-world Spanish feel, with ornate guitar, a complex
rhythm, and violins squeaking in a strange key. 27
uses several precussion instruments throughout,
including tamboruines and congo drums. Maria sings and
either Thos Niles or Ayal Nayor (I’m not sure which)
speaks every once in a while in a solid, deep voice.
I could go on describing Songs From the Edge of the
Wing, but it wouldn’t be as good as if you just
listened to it. You’re in for a treat! I didn’t even
tell you about "Warm Hands, Cold Heart," a slinky
piano bar song, or "Bird of Paradise," with it’s clear
electric guitars and light vocals, or the heavy cover
of Neil Young’s "Danger Bird." Even if you don’t like
the music, the CD cover is worth having because it is
so cool.
