Five Way Mirror - Playing Out Obscurity 7"
(Ochre)

I am always excited to get a new release from Windy & Carl. And though, officially, this isn't an actual Windy & Carl release, it gives me the same excited feeling. Five Way Mirror is a collaboration between Windy Weber (bass guitar), Carl Hultgren (guitar), and Greg Gasiorowski (electronics and samples). They have just recently released a wonderful first album on Burnt Hair Records, and this 7" contains two songs from that album ("Playing Out Obscurity" and "The Question"). However, before you start to think that you don't need to rush out and pick this up since you own the album, think again. Though the 7" features two songs from the album, they are drastically different remixes that make this 7" a necessity for any Windy & Carl or Greg Gasiorowski fan.

"Playing Out Obscurity" is my favorite of the two tracks. It starts off with Carl's soothing, swirling waves of sound setting the foundation. As Windy's steady bass and Greg's slow and steady rhythm of ambient clicks and beeps begin to fade in, the soothing waves of sound starts to turn darker and darker in tone getting more intense, dense, and menacing.

Unlike Windy & Carl's other releases, Five Way Mirror's album and single both have a darkness and moodiness to them that puts me into a more intense trance or dreamlike state. This 7" excels at taking the powerful focused songs from the album, and setting them afloat, allowing them to achieve a new level of range and depth.
