The Asteroids - Moonlight Music for Beginners
(Scientific Laboratories)

From the beginning of this short EP, I am bombarded by fey male vocals and pretty acoustic guitar strumming. The melody is nice... where did that drum machine come from?

Anyway, aside from being unconventional (if using a drum machine where it doesn't seem to belong classifies them as such) the Asteroids write some great songs. The singing is wonderful and the mood is thick. The second song, "Nine Lives," has some wonderfully orchestrated vocal harmonies.

I guess that the drum machine really throws me off. It sounds as though these guys (who seem to be just one guy with recording gear) want to replicate the sounds of an actual drummer instead of using the machine as it's own instrument.

"The Return of the Moonlightman" is really the only weak point in my opinion. The drums are simply too loud and take away from the soul of the song... the singing! With a real drummer, or perhaps Simon Raymonde programming the drum machine, these guys have a promising future.
