Perhaps this is the beginning of the new golden age of television. As the reality show craze reaches its third season, playing to every person's innate enjoyment of voyeurism, the trend naturally morphs into pure escapism. What could be better than enjoying the pitfalls and triumphs of the person next door trapped in extreme situations? The only way up is pure fantasy, of course. If the extreme parts of this world is so bad, take a look at this other world... it is freaking insane! Several shows, from Buffy to Dark Angel, have offered full, pure escapism, but the pinnacle of this genre was not reached until this fall TV season with the premiere of Wolf Lake.

What is Wolf Lake? Oh, it is just a small town in Eastern Washington where most of the population just happen to be werewolves! Here's how CBS describes the show:

There are strange happenings in the small Pacific Northwest town of Wolf Lake, where the most prominent residents are "shape-shifters" who can transform themselves into wolves. As a struggle for power is brewing among the "shape-shifter" population to become the Alpha (leader) wolf, local Sherrif Matthew Donner (Tim Matheson) and Seattle cop John Kanin (Lou Diamond Phillips) attempt to get to the bottom of the mysterious goings-on....

In commemoration of this bold, historic addition to the history of broadcast television, this issue of fakejazz.com is dedicated to Wolf Lake, and we have created a special page about the show and are starting an email discussion list called Flippers Anonymous to talk about the show and its impact.

What, music? What is that? Oh yeah, music! We have more reviews in this issue than we ever have before. More importantly, though, the prize for the contest issue is the biggest single prize we have ever given away. Three Lobed Recordings is starting a CD-EP subscription series entitled Purposeful Availment and will include records by Bardo Pond, Idyll Swords, Tim Midgett (Silkworm), Six Organs of Admittance, Tarentel, Mick Turner (Dirty Three), Shannon Wright, and either Rachel's or Shipping News. The 8-disc series is being sold for $50, but we have managed to trick the label into letting us give away a subscription as a prize to one of our readers. This is bound to be a great series, as all the music is exclusive to the series and all eight of those artists are very good. To enter, all you have to do is give us your name and email!

If you have any questions about the site, please send us an email or check out our message board. Look for our next issue on November 16th. Thanks for watching Wolf Lake on CBS at 10 pm EST.
