This issue of fakejazz is being published on a very special
day in the history of American culture. Today, August 4th, 2000, is the
release date for the movie Coyote Ugly. The studio description of the movie
is:
A sexy romantic comedy featuring a spectacular soundtrack, "Coyote Ugly" is
the story of one girl's wild adventure in the big city. Graced with a velvet
voice, 21-year-old Violet Sanford heads to New York to pursue her dream of
becoming a songwriter, only to find her aspirations sidelined by the accolades
and notoriety she receives at her "day" job as a bar maid at Coyote Ugly. A new
nightclub with a twist, Coyote Ugly is the hottest spot in town, featuring a
team of sexy, enterprising young women who tantalize customers and the media
alike with their outrageous antics.
Based on preliminary reviews, word of mouth, and hype, we at
fakejazz.com believe that Coyote Ugly may just be the most
important movie of this or any millennium, combining a truly original and
amazing story with a bold sociological statement on the empowerment of
women. Oscars are said to already be a lock for best picture, Piper Perabo
for best actress, John Goodman for best supporting actor, and David McNally
for best director. To commemorate this important date, we are both dedicating
this issue to the movie and creating a special
website and
message board about
it. We, of course, encourage you to accompany us in seeing the movie on its
opening weekend, and, afterwards, join in our discussion of the movie on our
Coyote Ugly message
board
There's more in this issue than our tribute to Coyote Ugly, though!
For one, we have a review of one of our most anticipated releases
of the year, Shellac's 1000 Hurts, as well as over 25 other reviews. Also, we have two
new interviews in this issue, with Mercury Program and Rothko. We also have a report from
the Transmissions.003
festival, detailing many of the performances and the general scene of the
festival. To round out the issue, we have a column on some much needed
box sets,
collected works of artists much too long out of print.
Let us know if you have any comments, either
send us an email or leave a note on our message board. We heart feedback.
Thanks you for coming, and please call again.
