Remember way back, ten years ago, when the first issue of fakejazz was posted. Back then,
there wasn't even an internet, so when I say "posted," I mean tacked on telephone poles throughout the
country. Don't laugh, it was the best way of distributing our little publication we could think of back
then. But thanks to the internet, things are a bit easier now. This issue, issue 9, is our tenth big
issue... yep, ten years and it only keeps getting better. For our big tenth anniversary issue, we have
so many reviews our editor didn't even have time to read them all (Ed: don't print that!), 46 to be exact.
This issue also falls near a very important date, and no I'm not talking about the release
of Black & Blue. The issue is being
posted on Thanksgiving day (offer available in USA only). In honor of that, the usual
picks we post with each issue have a special,
everyone sitting around the same dining table with scrumptious oven roasted tofurkey feel.
Aside from all those reviews, we also have two special articles. The first is a very in depth
column on the legal issues surrounding
Napster.
You have probably read a million articles on this topic, but you have not read anything like this.
This is no fluff piece full of unsubstantiated opinions or a simple news story of past events; this
is a thesis on the copyright issues behind the case, a review of the court cases, and analysis
of the results. If you want a greater knowledge of what really has and should happen, you have to
read Dave's article. The second article is a report on the year 2000 edition of the
CMJ Festival
in New York City. His first time at CMJ, writer Daron Gardner attended several of the showcases and
gives a review of the bands he saw and how his experiences changed his perceptions of the event.
Let us know if you have any comments, either
send us an email or leave a note on our message board. We heart feedback.
Look for our special year-end issue on December 15th. Trust us, it will be special. We haven't exactly figured out how it will be special, but it was unanimous it should be special. Thank you ever so much for coming by.
