The past few months I've gone through what has become the last rite of passage for people from Western cultures: getting married. Perhaps it is foolish, but the hope has become that this is the last time we get to have our parents rule our lives. It's our parents' party for our parents' friends and, oh yeah, maybe we might exchange some vows in a service of our parents' religion. Or, one set of parents' religion, at least. While certainly going through some stress to appease your parents is a decent and right thing to do, I personally reached my fill after, oh, the first week. But as Cheap Trick used to say, "surrender, surrender, but don't give yourself away."

There's something to be said for immediate gratification, and there's nothing immediate or gratifying about planning a wedding. It's better to just elope. The musical equivalent of eloping seems to be the CDR release. Record today, duplicate tonight, send to Ed at Eclipse tomorrow. I don't know how I started spending $50 bucks at a time for a bunch of biodegradable homemade discs, but somehow I have. The (an?) argument against MP3s killing music is that people like a permanent document with high quality packaging, but in the post-Napster age even those things aren't required. A cardboard slipcase, once relegated to disposable promos, is now the carrier for music with a shelflife of maybe a few years.

Duffy expires 4/18
Perhaps I shouldn't complain. Many marriages won't last that long either. It's like when former MTV VJ Duffy told Dateline NBC that when she got sarcoidosis, she found herself just trying to outlive the milk's expiration date. Maybe that's a good way to look at the upcoming marriage. As long as we can outlast my Jaybird CDR, we have a good chance of making it. Nevermind that Magnetic Drugs is already skipping. Or maybe the fiance will read this and think twice about marrying someone spendthrift enough to buy so many CDRs.
