One of my current fascinations is using the AMG "Related Artists" links to play my own kind of "Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon," only the purpose of my version is not to merely link together loosely related people, but rather to view the spread of influence of one seminal artist. One artist that means more to the history of music than any other. That one artist that defines a generation. Yes, Britney Spears.

Here's the rules of this game. First pick an artist you will try to match. Then, start at Britney's page on the All Music Guide. Click on any link in the "Similar Artists" category under "Related Artists." Try to reach your target artist in as few steps as possible.

Here are some fun matches to get you started:

  • Radiohead in 3 degrees: Britney — Robbie Williams — Oasis — Radiohead
  • Olivia Tremor Control in 3 degrees: Britney — Robbie Williams — Blur — Olivia Tremor Control
  • Mekons in 3 degrees: Britney — Hanson — Chumbawumba — Mekons
  • Tortoise in 4 degrees: Britney — Robbie Williams — Blur — Stereolab — Tortoise
  • Brian Eno in 4 degrees: Britney — Hanson — Savage Garden — Peter Gabriel — Brian Eno
  • Low in 5 degrees: Britney — Hanson — Jewel — Lisa Loeb — Ida — Low
So now I have a theory that there is no artist that cannot eventually be matched to Britney as being a "Related Artist" via transitivity. Britney now rules the music world; she is the center of all music.

This issue is a big one. There's two new interviews to check out, both by writer Anthony Gerace. The first is with the Chicago band L'Altra, who are preparing to release a new album in April, In the Afternoon. A lot of great stuff about their first album, the new album, how the band interacts, and—to top it all off—recent movies. The other interview is a short one with Jeremy DeVine, owner of TRL and member of Sonna, where he gives the advice for future fledgling label owners, "Going after bigger bands that already have tons of hype around them is a quick-fix and really does nothing for you in the long run." (Do as he says not how he does, I guess.) There's also 3 dozen new reviews for your review.

If you have any questions about the site, please send us an email. or stop by our message board. Look for our next issue on March 22nd. Thanks for everything.
