While Spring may be the season where nature awakens after months of lying
dormant, as far as the entertainment industry goes--and by entertainment,
I mean television--Fall is the time of year for rebirth. Yep, Big Brother
2 comes to an end this week with the final vote on who is to win the
half million dollars, but in its place comes half a dozen new reality
shows. What will be the new worst show on television? It is hard to say,
but my money would be on Fox. Their constant search for the
lowest common denominator was derailed somewhat this summer by CBS's Big
Brother 2 and NBC, who
unveiled both Fear Factor and Spy TV. How will Fox react? Of course
Fox totally changed the rules for how little sex or lust there can be in a show
and still have it be based on sex and lust with the first season of
Temptation Island. Well, this fall, Fox brings us
the next vacation, that's right, Temptation Island 2. Will anyone dump
anyone this time? We can only hope. Fox doesn't stop there, though. No,
no, no. Did someone say Love Cruise? What is Love Cruise, you say?
We are not so
sure, but we know it involves 1) sex and 2) lying.
Okay, what we know is that there are 16 singles
on the cruise and they are arbitrarily paired up. Every few days they have
to both decide whether they want to continue to be paired up or move on
to the next single. The people on the cruise of least attractiveness are
voted off, one by one. Who will win? The most
sexiest of people, of course--would there be any other way?
What, music? What is that? Oh yeah, music! Fall is a great time for
music, as well, as even the obscure independent labels tend to hold their
new releases until September to take full advantage of
the college student's textbook allowance. So there's several great new
albums reviewed in this issue, from the latest from major label acts like Sparklehorse
and Stereolab to lesser known but amazing albums from Explosions in the Sky, Acid Mothers Temple, and Pelt. We've also got an interview with
Kinski.
Kinski's Be Gentle
With the Warm Turtle may be the best album of 2001, mixing minimal drone, space rock, and hard psychedelic rock to create chugging, tireless riffs and monolithic explosions in sound.
The interview covers everything from how they were formed to their opinions
on the current cliches of rock to the most memorable shows they've done.
At the bottom of the interview you'll find tour dates for their upcoming
tour; try and check them out this fall if they come through your town.
We also have a contest
this issue. The prize pak is pretty big this time: a Reindeer Section CD
(feature members of all your favorite Scottish bands), a His Name is Alive
12" and poster, and Beulah posters done by the guy who did the Obey
Giant sticker. Try and win it, why don't you?
If you have any questions about the site, please send us an email or check out our message board. Look for our next issue on October 19th. Thanks for caring.
