Summer is almost upon us, which means for the next few months you can expect
the quality level here to drop just a little bit. I know, I know, some of
you are saying, "How much further down can it go?" It's not that the nice
weather will lead us to spend lots of time outdoors (we'd ruin the pasty
white complexion that gets us in all the hot goth clubs), or that we have
some grand getaway planned. It is the opposite. The summer means one thing:
staying inside in the air conditioning, and when you're inside and the
AC is blasting, listening to music can be difficult: nuance is lost, and quiet
music cannot be heard. Hell, we may get nothing done the next few months
since what do we review that isn't quiet or dependent on nuance?
But I guess there are always headphones. Maybe we'll be alright. Luckily,
we were able to get a lot done before the mercury level caught up with us, as
this is one of our biggest issues ever: over 40 reviews and two new
interviews. We've covered several new exciting releases in this issue,
like the new US
Maple, and the new Mogwai, and, oh yeah, also that new Unwound record. What is up with that one? I
am still not sure I understand what's going on. Maybe it's the humidity.
Our first interview is with Jeff Mueller. Jeff has made a name for himself
by playing in bands with Jason Noble, best known for his landmark Per
Mission cassette and the ever popular King G and the J Crew. I think one
of those bands they were in together was named Gamera, but currently
they are in the band The Perfect Storm. Hmmm... I hope I have those names
right. The interview goes into detail about how The Perfect Storm band
was formed, why some other band broke up, and how Steve Martin did hosting
the Oscars.
The second interview is with Daniel Smith of the Danielson Famile. The interview was done spur
of the moment as writer Dave Christensen waited for show headliners Low
to show up. However, if you're unfamiliar with the band, this is a great
introduction to what type of music they make, the meaning of their "unique spectacle"
of a live show, and how they feel their Christ-centered message of healing
is being received.
If you have any questions about the site, please send us an email (the message board is currently down for repairs). Look for our next issue on June 1st. Thanks for your support.
