Every music magazine
has to come up with an end of the year list and ranking of the best albums; it is some sort of rule or
something. We have done our list a little bit differently by making it a parody of the VH1 television
series THE LIST. Our writers discussed (read: threw hissy fits about) what they thought were the
top albums of the year and came up with a final list of 16 albums. It is now up to you, our audience,
to decide which of those 16 really are the best albums of 2000. All the arguments and fights are
included in the article, so go ahead and read our opinions, then make your choice! To thank you for voting, the poll
is also a contest, and the winners will receive the best albums of the year that they don't already
own.
This issue also includes an interview with the Pittsburgh drone and space group
Meisha. Actually,
this is not a normal interview, but rather our rendition of "Invisible
Jukebox," the column popularized in The Wire magazine. The idea is,
you picks songs from several different records and play them for the band,
not letting them know what the songs are. The band gets to guess what the
songs are and, in turn, discuss how that music relates to their own. Writer
John Fail exploited his friendship with the band quite well (not to mention
his savvy and huge collection of obscure records) in getting very
informative responses, probably more informative than any normal question and
answer interview would have gotten.
Aside from that, we've got over 30 new reviews including two or three great new
releases that no doubt would have appeared on THE LIST if we had only
compiled our choices a week or so later. Such is life. If your favorite
record of 2000 is missing from THE LIST, don't let that stop you from voting!
(Did I mention that the poll is also a contest?!?) Part of the fun of this format is that not all great
records get included, and not all survive elimination. So, please
vote.
