I know, I know, I know! I'm so late with this. Right now you're asking yourself, "Self, how long ago was this album released?" And then you're answering yourself, "February 20th, 2006." I certainly haven't had it for six months but I have had it for a pretty long time. Long enough to write something relevant about it and not have to explain myself. And now, everything I could've said about the album has already been said; and far more eloquently. So writing this got delayed even further as I debated as to whether or not I could contribute any original or new ideas. And then I came to the following conclusion:
No, I can't.
Even if I had decided to write before the statute of limitations had run out, I probably wouldn't have been able to contribute anything smart because by the time this album closes with "The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack," I'm balled up on the ground wishing dearly I could ever write a song so simple and so stunningly gorgeous and just so perfect. It's the best closer since "Good Morning, Captain." Sometimes, I catch my mom singing it. And she went to a Steely Dan and Michael MacDonald concert last week. Universality! If we're to believe the old Warren Ellis adage of "You're only as good as the last song on your last album," then Liars have officially challenged Slint for the Best Band Ever Title. Yes, kids, the BBE Title. And you know what? The rest of the album is pretty kick ass, too.
It even comes with three visual interpretations of the album on accompanying DVD! How are those? I have no idea! I never got past the album. It's too good. I mean, it's really good. I'm so overwhelmed by this album, someone else had to give me the idea to put that "really" in italics! I eventually decided to go ahead and write this because I feel like I'd be doing the band (huge as they may be) a disservice by not saying, "Yeah, I think it's pretty good too." And I did it despite an almost complete lack of anything substantial or new to say about it!
Hyperbolic speechless review ended!
