TV Gilmore Girls Ep 131 Season 6 - Partings

gilmore2.jpgSeason 6 of the Gilmore Girls ends similarly to how Seasons 4 and 5 ended, however, this time it's not Rory completely fucking up her life - losing her virginity to a married man (even if it was her Dean) then getting arrested under the influence of a playboy boyfriend. This time it's Lorelai. And Christopher, who - if we're to believe the implications of the last scene with Lorelai seemingly topless in his bed - is just as complicit as the uberdepressed Lorelai. Who would have thought that the person who'd spark the final undoing of Luke and Lorelai was Jan Levinson(-Gould)? After one of Emily and Richard's notorious set-ups, this time trying to hook up Christopher with the psychologist daughter of a friend. While Jan was able to stomach making out with Michael Scott, she has no interest in hunky Chris (nor he in her), and as Jan and Lorelai are leaving the party, Lorelai's building uncertainty over her botched marriage plans leads her to seek counseling in the backseat of Jan's car. Jan's advice is vague but immediate - I wonder how many real psychologists are willing to give such direct instructions during a first session (maybe Jan was looking to screw up Lorelai's life even more to make sure she's a regular appointment). Jan's advice is ask for what you want, and if you don't get it, it wasn't meant to be, and Lorelai takes this advice to its logical extreme, issuing an ultimatum with a 20 second time limit. After Luke fails to recite the show's theme song ("if you lead, I will follow"), Lorelai leaves for Chris' apartment and, most likely, puts the nail in the coffin, so to speak. Hey, her parents are finally past trying to get her back together with Chris, that means it's finally time for her to get back together with Chris. Notably this helps her none; the show ends with her equally blank, dead stare - opening with her on Sookie's couch while she's avoiding facing Luke ("be sooper quiet for a sooper prize!") and closing with her in Chris' bed. While this monkeywrench in the 7 season long story arc is disconcerting, we will feel even more cheated if it's a red herring and she didn't really sleep with Chris, i.e., not just literally slept but we-uh-we-uh-we-uh slept. There is a strong possibility. The show might end next season (Lauren and Alexis signed one year deals and the show is supposed to end with Rory's graduation), and she's not going to end up with Chris (who is only signed up to be in "a few" episodes), so either she ends up with no one or Luke is amazingly forgiving. It's unlikely the show is heading towards a dead end finale where the Girls realize that all they have is each other; nothing could be more depressing. Hell, what am I saying? Luke was able to wait through the near marriage to Max, even making them a chuppah. Luke was able to wait through her relationship with Digger and other guys who understood her far less. If there's any type of guy who can deal with this situation, it's a guy like Luke - that is to say a made up guy on an increasingly frustrating TV show.

I agree the episode was frustrating, as any "cliffhangar" could be, but how come no mention of all the amazing bands and artists that made appearances? Especially SAM PHILLIPS!!!

Well, it wasn't my original intent, but I realized I had enough to say about Luke & Lorelai to not mention the guest spots. Seems every other music site out there dropped a mention of the visiting troubadors; ended up feeling it'd be better if I focused on the story instead of how tall Coco is.
