Uh oh, this episode featured actual plot development. Too much in fact. So much happened, that if history is any (TV) guide, November sweeps will feature a lot of side stories about Lane and Sookie. Not only did we learn how Richard got the doll house to Lorelai's house (you can separate it into smaller parts!), but Lorelai and Rory made a small first step towards mending their relationship. The occasion of Rory's 21st birthday presents the opportunity for bridges to be built. Rory had planned to go to Atlantic City with her mom to play 21 when she turns 21, but now that those plans cannot be, Emily plans a formal party for Rory. Of course, Rory is completely unenthused about the formal party, with its pink drinks and staged candle blowing. However, the extended guestlist and formal invitations gives Rory the chance to invite her mom to the party without actually making personal contact. Lorelai, thinking it was all Emily's doing, ignores the invitation until Rory (!) calls her (!) on the telephone (!). So mom goes to the party, and there's an awkward conversation between the two, but at least it's a step. More important news from the party is Rory's seeming jealousy over Paris becoming editor of the newspaper ("Now I'm sleeping with the editor!"), Luke's sweet gift of an antique pearl necklace that belonged to his family, and Richard's seething anger towards the situation he's gotten himself into - Rory out of Yale, sleeping in his pool house, having sex with Logan on the sex mattress he bought for her. Emily's snide remark that they won't have failed until she comes back pregnant sends Lorelai running out of the room, reinforcing her decision to offer her parents no help in fixing Rory's life, and let Rory follow her own path back. So, so much happened this episode, you'd think the next couple episode would just feature Rory sitting in a room, debating with herself whether she should read a course catalog or not. But hark! The previews show Jess making a cameo appearance to totally take names and stir some shit up! Who would have thought I would be excited to see Jess? (Hell, if TJ could manage to get Logan out of the picture, I'd be glad to see him featured in a few more episodes.)
