TV Super Bowl 39

Tom BradyThe pinnacle of American entertainment rolls into it's thirty-ninth year, with festivities perhaps a step down from last year's titty-baring controversy. The wholesome, beloved entertainer Paul McCartney delivered a breast-free halftime show with suprisingly predictable fare (I mean, I can't really expect him to perform "Ram On" instead of "Hey Jude") but an equally surprising penchant for hard rock at his senior age.

Game-wise we found the New England Patriots establishing a "dynasty", again by only three points. While it was technically a "good" game I found it lacking the drama of their victory last year over the Carolina Panthers. The first quarter ended scoreless, which gave me hopes for a 3-0 Super Bowl, but it was not to be.

I don't know what warmed my heart more - the collaboration between the Black-Eyed Peas, Earth Wind and Fire and Charlie Daniels, or seeing Bill Clinton and George HW Bush hanging out with Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long, hair blowing in the wind. If America ever needed to be healed, this was the way to do it.

The commercials (the focal point of the Super Bowl for most Americans) were pretty underwhelming. While I found the Burt Reynolds/talking animal Kinko's commercial to be charming, the GoDaddy.com commercial featuring the stacked bimbo in the tanktop took the Super Bowl to an even lower standard of good taste than Janet Jackson did. I will look for a new registrar now. I can't believe the NFL would allow that commercial despite all of their other precautions, especially after the "Desperate Housewives"/Terrell Owens debacle.

I, of course, incorrectly predicted that Owens would suffer a career-ending injury in this game. He looked to be in fine form, as well as anyone could be against such a ferocious defense. After five beers, this night of entertainment concluded without any drama, no heartbreaking stories, and yet another victory for a team that wins so much it's not even fun to watch them.

As an Eagles fan, I look forward to Super Bowl 42 when they finally get over the (next) hump and win it all. The mistake I'm most upset about was trying an onside kick with 1:55 left. If the game had followed the same script with a true kickoff, McNabb would have had the ball back at his 35 or so, only needing about 30 yards for a good FG attempt. Instead, they were in a near impossible situation at the 5. I know Collinsworth and Aikman were saying you have to risk it, but given how many NFC championships Reid blew by playing it conservative, why not go the conservative route again and trust your defense? On the plus side, most of the players will be back next year, and there's little in the NFC to compete with, let alone NFC East, especially if Favre retires, Alexander leaves Seattle, and Moss leaves Minnesota.

I wasn't going to comment on this until I saw that great new picture that was added. I don't know much about football, but I know when I like a guy's ass.

It seems like so many super bowls are really close, and it's becoming less exciting when they are...but I enjoyed watching this one. The better team won, by the way, and Jimmy, a team only gets so many chances to get over their humps...

The better team did win, but the game was there for the taking for the Eagles. Given the state of the NFC, the Eagles will get another chance or two in McNabb's career, at the very least. You're the person who said they'd lose in Round 1 because of the layoff, Adam. I was the one who said they'd beat Atlanta and had a better chance of making the Super Bowl than your beloved Stillers.
