Joanna Newsom appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Thursday night as the musical guest. Just her and her harp, playing "The Sprout and the Bean" to what I assume was a largely befuddled audience. Her voice was perhaps even more affected than on record. It could have been nerves, or she could have been overacting her character in hopes it would show better on TV, but it came off as unpolished. While the "lass" part of "the lass with a harp" formula was mediocre at best, the harp part was a joy to see. Her playing was mesmerizing, especially (to my untrained eyes) in the instrumental portion as her two hands looked like spiders on the strings, deftly plucking the melody. Perhaps the only thing more odd than seeing Joanna and her harp on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" would be seeing Neil Hamburger there, sitting beside Yoko Ono.

Definitely the fakest singer out there, right next to Tom Waits. Man, I hate her.

I was amazed by Joanna. Seeing her play those songs while singing just totally blew me away. If anything, her performance renewed my belief in her...unfakeness.

Yeah, this was really great, I agree, Luke. She seemed really nervous (which isn't surprising at all), and her harp playing really amazed me. Her voice is so great...a little shakey on those two performances from nerves, but still very solid.
