Movies Tarnation (Jonathan Caouette, 2003)

TarnationA documentary supposedly about growing up with his schizophrenic mother, but in the end, it really just seems like a documentary about filmmaker Jonathan Caouette. At the beginning, Caouette uses a mixture of audio recordings, photographs, Super-8 films, and more from his life growing up, to great effect, but as the film goes on, it gets a little frustrating to watch as it starts to feel more and more staged. When you make a documentary on yourself, it would make sense that you would want to make yourself appear a certain way, but it was really tedious to watch at times. And just didn't seem very genuine. However, there were a lot of moments in the film, mostly the older film footage, that was really amazing and intriguing. Caouette has a very interesting idea, but despite a few moments of greatness, overall it is not very well handled or layed out.
