Movies House of Flying Daggers (Yimou Zhang, 2004) website

House of Flying DaggersHouse of Flying Daggers is a really well done love story/love triangle from the same director as Hero and Raise the Red Lantern. The movie with a few really amazing scenes. The opening scene in the Peony Pavillion is great with its set design and costumes (with a nice payoff later in the movie), and the ending scene in the snow with the final dagger toss is great too. It didn't have the cinematography of Hero, and the story was more conventional (although one could say there are a million movies covering the same subject as Hero in China/Hong Kong, they just never make it to the West). Still, it's a really good movie.

Movies Tarnation (Jonathan Caouette, 2003)

TarnationThis was alright at the beginning, but by the end, I was getting really sick of how staged most of it felt. When you do a documentary on yourself, it makes sense that you would want to make yourself appear a certain way, but it was really tedious to watch at times. Other moments were really amazing, freaky, and interesting. A very interesting idea, but not very well handled, overall.

TV Lost Ep 14 Season 1 - Special website

LostLost was really great last night. In a sense, you shouldn't need Abrams to hit you over the head with the fact that Walt's (the kid) imagination is coming to life. We saw it in an earlier episode. I guess what he is reinforcing is that, unlike Locke, the specialness of Walt on the island has more to do with Walt than the island. The reappearance of Claire brings up the question of whether she is still pregnant. It didn't occur to me to check in the brief second she was on last night. You have to think, for story's sake, she's not.

Albums Y.A.C.H.T. - Super Warren MMIV (States Rights) website

Super Warren MMIVI really love this album. Really great electronic pop kind of a similar style to hollAnd, who I love, but a little more playful and fun. Super Warren MMIV Would be boosted up to an 11 if it was a little bit shorter, but that isn't a big complaint since all the songs are still really good.

Albums Low - The Great Destroyer (Subpop) website

The Great DestroyerOne of my favorite Low releases has always been the "Venus" 7" that came out on Subpop in the 90s. It's very pop and conventional, without betraying what Low was and is. A mature version of Long Division. This release (which also happens to be on Subpop) seems to fit well with that single. One glaring thing about the album is that Sparhawk seems really fed up with writing songs, and he approaches that topic with biting sarcasm in the lyrics.
