coyote ugly

the movie

"A sexy romantic comedy featuring a spectacular soundtrack, Coyote Ugly is the story of one girl's wild adventure in the big city. Graced with a velvet voice, 21-year-old Violet Sanford heads to New York to pursue her dream of becoming a songwriter, only to find her aspirations sidelined by the accolades and notoriety she receives at her day job as a bar maid at Coyote Ugly. A new nightclub with a twist, Coyote Ugly is the hottest spot in town, featuring a team of sexy, enterprising young women who tantalize customers and the media alike with their outrageous antics." - Touchstone Pictures

coyote ugly, why would you name a bar that?

Because Cheers was taken.

the hype

Based on preliminary reviews, word of mouth, and hype, we at fakejazz.com believe that Coyote Ugly may just be the most important movie of this or any millennium, combining a truly original and amazing story with a bold sociological statement on the empowerment of women. Oscars are said to already be a lock for best picture, Piper Perabo for best actress, John Goodman for best supporting actor, and David McNally for best director. The movie is being described as a combination of Cocktail and Flashdance or, more simply, "Cocktail without the 'cock'."

The 5 Coyote Ugly bartenders

the water dance

Feeding off the prerelease hype of Coyote Ugly, some of the major television news outlets (Extra, Entertainment Tonight, E!, etc.) have started showing parts of this soon to be famous scene. This scene should go down in movie history as being as great as the shower scene in Psycho, Orson Welles whispering "Rosebud" with his last breaths in Citizen Kane, or the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles. In this scene, all five bartenders (Perabo, Bello, Banks, Izabella Miko, and Bridget Moynahan) do a seductive dance on top of the bar, heating up both the audience of men and themselves, only to put out that fire by pouring pitchers full of water on themselves and each other. This no doubt screams out for automatic inclusion with the classic moments of cinema.

the message

Clearly though, director David McNally is making a statement with this movie. This is not just a story about a songwriter and a bar; this is a bold sociological treatise on the empowerment of women. As in the water scene described above, the women are in complete control of the situation. They decide to begin the water dance, they decide when they will jump on the bar to perform the dance, and, even, they themselves pour the water all over each other. These women are not being employed by men to perform these acts. They are not being coerced by men into doing them. These women are merely celebrating and fully realizing their skills as bartenders and dancers. McNally describes the bartenders in his movie as "women who use their sexual powers to be strong, misbehave, have fun, and succeed in business." Bello agrees, saying "This movie is really about empowering girls" as shown by the women's power over the "decision of when to dance on the bar and when not to."

Three empowered women. Finally Hollywood
is starting to treat women with respect.
