O-Town: The Big OThe staff here at fakejazz is full of celebrities (it's true!!): Dave Christensen is in the now infamous Los Angeles band King Clubfoot; Clubfoot the Tyrant, Ned Clayton is a comedian whose gender bending comedic stylings has been seen on Jay Leno's The Tonight Show, and at age 7 Jim Steed appeared in an episode of CHIPs (but later left the glamour of Hollywood behind when he was disillusioned by hearing Eric Estrada say that he wasn't a policeman in real life). However, none of our staff is more of a celebrity than Dick Baldwin. Dick's father was in the military when Dick was born, so he spent most of his younger years moving from state to state and country to country. Born in Germany, he quickly moved from Germany to Florida to Alaska to Utah to the Philippines to Maine and back to Florida. In all that time moving around, Dick had a lot of adventures, and inadvertently made himself quite famous. We all know that Limousine Lou A.K.A. Lou Pearlman B.K.A. The Sixth Backstreet Boy has done it again. We all know that O-Town is the new big thing. With their debut single "Liquid Dreams" racing up the charts, their trendsetting ABC TV series Making the Band, their debut self-titled album coming out on January 23rd, and their recent performance on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2001, O-Town are making their mark in the music history books. Over the holiday's, I, Daron Gardner, took some time out of my busy schedule to interview Dick Baldwin (my roommate) about what it was like growing up and going to high school with Erik-Michael Estrada from Orlando's own O-Town. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by his answers and maybe even by my questions. Also, we will find out if Dick's exposure to O-Town's Erik-Michael Estrada will be as life altering as Jim Steed's experience with CHIPs' Eric Estrada.
dick:I don't know. fakejazz:So you really know Erik-Michael? dick:Well, we went to the same high school. I only went to that school for my junior and senior years though, so I only went to school with him for 2 years. fakejazz:What is he like? Is he as cute in person as he is on TV? dick:It was a big enough school that I didn't know most of the people well at all. So I didn't really know Erik. He wasn't anything special. I guess he looked pretty much just like he looked on TV. fakejazz:Did you ever touch him? dick:No. fakejazz:Not even on accident or in passing in the hallway? dick:No. fakejazz:What was the first thing he ever said to you? Do you still remember it like it was yesterday? dick:I don't remember him ever talking to me. So I don't think he ever said anything to me. If he did, it didn't strike me as important or memorable. fakejazz:Did you ever have PE class with him? dick:No. I didn't take PE. fakejazz:Tell me something funny that he did when you knew him. dick:Again, I didn't know him. I do remember him doing something during the graduation ceremony. After he got his diploma and as he was walking across the stage, I think that he put his hands in the air and did the "make some noise" motion with his arms. It seems like some people laughed at that. That's really the only thing I remember about him. fakejazz:Do you think he will do that move a lot while in his hit band O-Town? dick:I don't know. fakejazz:Do you remember thinking that he had a special something about him? Do you remember him having a certain "star quality"? dick:No. fakejazz:He has a number of trademark moves that I have seen him do on TV. One is throwing a towel into the audience after he has used it to wipe his sweat off, and the other is wearing a tennis type visor a lot. Did he do those when you knew him? dick:I don't know, probably.
